The best places to Surf on the Sunshine Coast
Surfing on the Sunshine Coast
If you like to surf, and who doesn’t, then you’ll love the Sunshine Coast in Queensland. With 63 different spots stretched out over roughly 25 miles, you’ll find that there’s something for everyone out here. You’ll find beginners just out to have fun and learn a little, as well as the intermediates who are moving up in the ranks. The advanced surfers as well as the pro’s will find plenty of spots to hone their skills. Sunshine Coast is a surfers paradise that is bound to please anyone who goes there. So, let’s take a look.
First, we have the Happy Valley spot. The waves typically don’t get that high so it’s a good place for swimming also. This is a good spot to learn at. The aptly named “old woman” spot is also easy to navigate. The surf is seldom rough so there is rarely any whitewater. Perfect for the “old woman” surfer in us. Noosa Ground and Mudjima are also good spots to get your board wet for the first time. The water will take it easy on you as you learn it’s patterns. You can also just sit back and have a good time watching all the other beginners wipe out!
If you’re one of the many who have mastered the “waves” at the beginner spots and you’re ready to move up, spots like Double Island Point and the Anne Street Reef will be more to your liking. The waves are steady, but not that strong. They let you stay upright long enough so when you do wipeout, you know why. Kings Beach and The Spit are two more spots where surfers of all experience levels come to just have a good time. You can watch the beginners struggle and have fun with it, or the pro’s show off riding the tubes.
Most of the time though, you’ll see the pro’s in their own spots taking on waves that only experienced surfers should tackle. The Rock and Old Woman Ledge are two of those spots. The surf is challenging and dangerous, and that’s how the experienced surfers become more experienced, by challenging themselves and taking it to the limit. Sharks’ spot and The Cove are also two places that, if you go to and are not experienced, you would be better suited to sit back and learn from the masters. The waters out there can get real choppy and hard to navigate.
If surfing is your scene and you’re new to the area, or if it’s something you would like to try, then the Sunshine Coast is where you want to be. The weather is beautiful, the salty, ocean air is relaxing, and it has a kick-back, have fun atmosphere that’s hard to beat. It’s one of those places that, once you go there one time, you’ll wonder why you’ve never been there before. Try it for a weekend and you’ll fall in love with it. You’ll probably never want to leave.
